Purchasing Manager

LOCATION: BROOKINGS, SOUTH DAKOTA

JOB OVERVIEW: We are searching for an experienced Purchasing Manager for our Brookings, South Dakota manufacturing operation. This position is responsible for the company’s procurement activities in the Brookings plant. The ideal candidate will develop purchasing strategies, maintain positive relationships with current suppliers, coordinate with internal teams regarding their supply needs, oversee the Brookings purchasing team, and participate in the daily purchasing activities. Secondly, this position will manage and optimize the purchasing activities and processes by leading and negotiating acceptable supply agreements with current and future suppliers. Finally, this leader must personally exemplify the characteristics we seek in all members of our team – good attitude, intelligence, integrity, and humility.

Our ISO certified precision metal capabilities in Brookings, SD and St. Paul, MN include CNC milling and turning (Brookings), stamping with full tool room die design and build (Brookings) , laser cutting (St. Paul), CNC punch/laser combo (St. Paul), press brake forming (both), welding (both), and assembly (both). This is a full-time, professional position that reports to the General Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies for Purchasing and Outside Services.

  • Daily management of purchasing activities, supervision of staff, and allocation of tasks.

  • Manage supplier relationships and negotiate contracts, prices, timelines, etc.

  • Maintain supplier database, purchase records, supplier performance, and related documentation.

  • Manage inventory control to determine and manage inventory needs.

  • In addition to direct material purchasing, perform MRO buying activity.

  • Ensure all procured items meet the required quality standards and specifications.

  • Prepare cost estimates and manage budgets.

  • Continuously improve purchasing systems and processes.

  • Train new employees in the purchasing process and how to use the purchasing system.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years experience as a Purchasing Manager / professional, preferably in the contract manufacturing environment.

  • Completion of APICS or CPIM is a plus.

  • A bachelor’s degree in business or supply chain management is a plus.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and mechanical drawings.

  • Strong, proven negotiation skills.

  • Strong analytical skills, particularly using MS Excel.

  • Proven background managing inventory and supply chain.

  • Familiarity with Kanban, Lean, supplier stocking programs and MRP systems.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with ERP business software. Visual Enterprise preferred.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to work independently.
